Cost of Attendance

Breaking down the costs

Understanding your Cost of Attendance

One of the most confusing aspects of the financial aid process is understanding the figures given as the Cost of Attendance. The cost of attendance is important for two primary reasons. Namely, the estimates give the student and their family an idea of what costs might be incurred here at WSU. There are two types of costs listed: direct costs and indirect costs. Direct costs are those that must be paid to the University to attend (i.e. tuition and fees). Indirect costs are things such as living expenses, transportation, miscellaneous expenses, etc. It is important to differentiate between the two as indirect costs are simply estimates used by our office in the awarding process to ensure that students have enough aid while direct costs are actual amounts that will be charged to the student's account.

We include indirect costs into the budget so that aid can be awarded to assist students in paying living and miscellaneous expenses. Keep in mind that the Office of Financial Aid can only award students with an amount of aid equal to or less than their associated cost of attendance budget. If you have questions regarding your budget, please visit the Revision Request and Award Appeals page of the OFAS web site.

Important: All students receive the same allowance for room and board regardless of whether they live in a residence hall, greek housing, or off-campus. It is important that students budget and plan accordingly.

Traditional vs. Non-Traditional

Traditional
The traditional student budget is for students who are single undergraduates who are unmarried without children and married students who are both attending.

Non-Traditional
The Non-Traditional student budget is for students with children or married students whose spouse is not attending.

A couple other important notes

  • Costs are for two semesters (i.e. an academic year).
  • Students enrolling only in one semester should divide all costs in half.
  • Unless otherwise noted, estimates are for full-time (undergraduate students above 12, graduate students above 10).
  • Summer session is a separate cost of attendance, please visit the Summer Aid page for more information.
  • Students living at home with their parents will have their room and board budgets cut in half.

Please note that Cost of Attendance figures are estimates derived from past figures, institutional changes, and cost of living adjustments. They should be considered adequate for the average student. As such, differences in lifestyle and individual tastes and preferences cannot be accounted for. If you have questions or concerns regarding your budgeted cost of attendance, please contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Understanding the Budget Components

Tuition

Tuition is a direct cost that students must pay to student accounts. It is assessed on a per-credit basis, except for full-time students whose tuition remains constant from 10 credits to 18 credits.

Mandatory Fee(s)

Depending on which campus the student attends, they may be responsible for paying mandatory fees. These are not negotiable and must be paid. This component, as well as the actual tuition, are the two aspects of the cost of attendance that are considered to be direct costs to the student.

Room/Board

The Room and Board component of the cost of attendance estimates the costs of living for the academic year. It is comprised of average living costs, meal plans, and other factors. Students wishing to live off-campus or in Greek housing should consider the associated costs with that living choice along with this budgetary constraint. For Residence Hall students, Room and Board is considered to be a direct cost due to the University.

Books and Supplies

Books and supplies estimates are calculated using the average expenses of most students. Depending on major and program, these costs can vary. These are indirect costs, paid by the student out of pocket. For degree programs requiring the use of extensive materials or books, a revision request can be completed to account for these costs.

Travel/Transportation/Miscellaneous Expenses

These indirect costs are accounted for in the cost of attendance to ensure that students have the funds necessary to cover other aspects of their lives. It is important to note that these allowances may not account for differences in tastes, lifestyles, or personal choices. These estimates are calculated using averages and may be high or low depending on the individual student. It is important for the student to budget and plan accordingly.
