Over 700 different scholarship programs are awarded through the Washington State University Academic Scholarship Application. The deadline for this application is January 31st each year. You must submit this application every year to be considered for university awards.

We recommend completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), as well as the WSU Academic Scholarship Application. The FAFSA helps us determine your eligibility for any financial need based scholarships. For more information, click here. The priority FAFSA filing date is February 15th.

If you apply for admission and submit your Academic Scholarship Application, you are automatically considered for the following awards. Scholarships can be awarded to all degree-seeking, undergraduate, graduate, international and professional program students. Specific requirements for each scholarship are listed below.

University Achievement Award

The University honors your strong academic record with an award that's renewable for a second year. Awards generally range from $2,000 to $4,000 and are granted to incoming freshmen students who:

  • have the right combination of high school grades and standardized test scores
  • have a complete application for admission to the Pullman campus by the January 31 priority application date
  • are residents of the state of Washington

Note: This award cannot be combined with the Regents Scholar Award or the National Merit Semifinalist Scholarship.

Cougar Academic Award/WUE

This award is offered to top incoming freshmen from throughout the United States at either of two levels: $4,000 or $9,000 per academic year. The $9,000 level serves as WSU’s Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) scholarship. Because at WSU they are one and the same, students will not receive both a CAA and a WUE award. At both levels, this award may be renewed for up to three years. To qualify, you must:

  • have the right mix of high schools grades and standardized test scores.
  • be a resident in the United States, outside the state of Washington.
  • Have a complete admission application by the January 31 priority application date, and enroll as a freshman at the Pullman campus.*

*Students admitted into the Pharmacy. and Veterinary Medicine professional programs, and transfer students, are not eligible for this award or for renewal.

*This award cannot be combined with the National Merit Semifinalist Scholarship.

Future Cougars of Color

This program combines competitive awards with an exciting campus visit program.  Applicants must attend the Future Cougars of Color event on the Pullman campus, where interviews with faculty help determine award levels. For more information, please visit the Future Cougars of Color site.

Endowed Scholarships

These scholarships are available to undergraduate, graduate, international and professional program students, and are made possible through the outstanding generosity of donors who believe in the extraordinary possibility of WSU students.  Awards are based on varying combinations of academic performance, extracurricular involvement, financial need, and academic interest area. Award amounts vary, and many are worth thousands of dollars.  You are automatically considered for all these awards by completing the Academic Scholarship Application.

Glenn Terrell Presidential Scholarships

This award is offered to incoming freshmen and transfer students with outstanding academic records.  Awards are currently valued at $2,000 and $4,000 and are renewable for up to two to four years.  Students must have a completed admission application and Academic Scholarship Application by January 31 to qualify.  All campuses qualify.

Academic Achievement/Diversity Scholarships

The Academic Achievement/Diversity Scholarship is a highly competitive award based on your academic strength, demonstrated leadership skills, commitment to volunteer work and community service, and a high level of financial need.  These $2000 and $4000 awards are renewable for up to four years.  In addition to submitting completed admission application materials and the Academic Scholarship Application by January 31st, qualified applicants must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA) by the February 15th priority deadline.  All campuses qualify.

Access and Opportunity Award

This program recognizes incoming freshmen with outstanding high school grades and transfer students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 who are enrolling on the Pullman campus.  Students must have graduated from one of the targeted high schools serving low-income populations.  Scholarships are currently awarded at $5,000 and $3,000 levels, and are renewable for up to four years.

Non US Citizens who have resided in the state of Washington for at least three years, and earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, may be eligible to complete the “Non-US Citizens Affidavit of Residency.”

Transfer Achievement Award

This award is offered to entering transfer students that have already earned their Associates degree, and are attending the Pullman campus.  Students must be residents of Washington, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA.  The award is valued at $2,500 and is renewable for a second year.

College and Departmental Scholarships

In addition to the awards based on the WSU Academic Scholarship Application and the FAFSA data, most colleges and departments at WSU have scholarships.  While many use the WSU Academic Scholarship Application to select their recipients, we recommend contacting your academic area of interest to inquire about their specific process, which may include additional applications or deadlines.  You do not necessarily have to be certified into a specific major to receive a scholarship from the college or department.

For assistance in locating your academic area of interest, please view this list of fields of study.

WSU Alumni Association Scholarships

The Washington State University Alumni Association offers scholarships that recognize the strong leadership characteristics and solid academic performances of incoming freshmen.  These scholarships may require a supplemental application, as well as submission of the Academic Scholarship Application.  For more information on this opportunity, please visit the Alumni Association scholarships site.

Scholarship Information Websites

Here is a list of web sites that we have found useful. Lending institutions sponsor some of these sites, so you may receive promotional mailings about educational loan opportunities after you conduct your scholarshiap search. You can find many more similar sites by doing an interent search on the term "free scholarship search".

You can also search the internet directly for scholarships. Using your favorite search engine (such as Google), enter specific search terms. Think about your field of study and who you are. For example: "foundation scholarship music performance" or "scholarship single parent academic."

  • Never pay for a scholarship search! No matter what some sites may say, all of the information they have is available for free. Organizations that would charge a fee for this information - or charge a fee to apply for a scholarship - are very likely scams and should be avoided. All of the sites listed below are free.
  • Take a look at several of these sites to see which ones might work best for you. They don't necessarily all have the same information. And some of them may be specialized for particular types of students.
  • For the best results, treat your search for scholarship funding like a small part-time job. A good strategy is to have a scheduled weekly time to check in with your favorite scholarship web sites and to work on scholarship applications. Keep this up year-round for as long as you're a student. You'll find the right scholarships to apply for and never miss a deadline.
