Summer Financial Aid

Funding Summer Session

Summer session is a great way to get ahead in your academic program. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is committed to providing opportunities for students outside of the traditional academic year. It's important to keep in mind that the Summer session is separate from all other terms and that the financial aid process is different as well.

Apply

To be considered for Summer financial aid, a student has to have completed two separate processes.

  1. The student has to have a valid FAFSA on file for the previous Academic Year. For example, for the Summer term of 2009 (i.e. May 2009 to July 2009) - a student must have a 2008-2009 FAFSA on file. Washington State University considers Summer session to be at the end of the academic year (i.e. Aid is awarded for Fall/Spring and then Summer).

  2. The student has to have a valid summer session application form on file. This form is located here and is very short, asking only for contact information. OFAS uses this information to determine which students need financial aid and award those students accordingly.

Summer award letters are sent in Mid-March prior to the summer session. Students can check their status by selecting the Summer tab on their MyWSU.

Cost of Attendance

Unlike the academic year, the Cost of Attendance figures for summer vary widely. These figures depend on the number of credits taken, the amount of time spent in Pullman, and the student's academic standing. The following table gives the per-credit cost of attendance figures. If you have questions regarding your total budget, please contact our office or consult the budget components below. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships accounts for changes in enrollment through the submission of a form 94 which is available here.

Aid Availability

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships chooses to focus student aid on the traditional academic year (i.e. Fall and Spring semesters). As such, many students have little aid left for the summer semester. Typically, federal aid for summer consists of the grants and loans that a student may have qualified for but did not receive during the academic year. In addition, students are often awarded Parent PLUS Loans which can fill the balance or be declined in favor of an alternative/private loan.

Important

Summer aid is disbursed differently from aid received during the regular academic year. Students taking classes in multiple summer sessions will have all of their aid disbursed on the first day of class of their first session. Tuition is charged at the beginning of each summer session, therefore it is important that students budget appropriately and save the funds necessary for the following summer session in order to pay their tuition. Every year, our office encounters students who have neglected to set aside funds for their later summer sessions and who have tuition with late fees assessed due to the University. There is little that we can do to ease the situation.

If you are an undergraduate enrolled for more than 6 weeks, and/or enrolled in more than 6 credits or a graduate student enrolled for more than 6 weeks, and/or more than 3 credits please complete and submit Form 94 Additional Hours/Weeks located here and submit it to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at the address below or to your nearest WSU campus.

If you should have any questions regarding your summer aid situation, please contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for more information.
